Synthesis

The short story The Lottery and the speech "Perils of Indifference" both talk about the extraordinary but horrific feats ordinary people can and do if beleived is right. Between these two stories they share one thing, beleif. The Lottery shows the people of "the village" gathering ,in some what of a festiive way, at the town square for their annual lottery and all with a positive feeling about them. The fact that they all know whats coming indacates that they all beleive in what they are participating in, now jumping into the speech Perils of Indifference by Elie Wiesel we shift into history and the realism behind The Lottery and the idea of people being controlled by beleif. The speech talks about the horrors commited by the German people against the jewish race and how these ordinary people became such savages and death dealers, all this information and knowledge of what happened shows how a leader ,Hitler in this case, can minipulate and deseive people into beleiving that the jewish people were the cause of all there problems and because they beleived what hitler was saying most of them did not feel bad about what were they doing. Eli also talks about maybe the need for this and that it maybe "necessary at times to practise it to simply keep one's sanity"
